Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How often should I floss?
A: Flossing your teeth helps prevent cavities from forming between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. It also keeps your gums healthy. Flossing after every meal is ideal, but, is not always realistic. Try to create a habit of flossing every night before going to sleep.
Q: Are electric toothbrushes better than manual ones?
A: If a manual toothbrush is used for the appropriate amount of time with proper technique, it can perform just as well as a powered toothbrush. But many people don’t brush for the recommended two to three minutes and reach all tooth surfaces. Children are good candidates for powered brushes because their brushing habits tend to be more playful than thorough. While everyone certainly does not need an electric toothbrush, in many instances they can be beneficial. Ask Dr. Plumlee at your next routine visit whether an electric toothbrush is right for you.
Q: What brand of toothbrush should I use?
A: The brand of toothbrush you purchase is not as critical as the type of bristle and the size of the head. A soft toothbrush with a small head is recommended because medium and hard-bristled, larger head brushes tend to cause irritation and contribute to the recession of the gums, causing sensitivity. In some cases, when a person is already experiencing sensitivity due to gum recession, an extra soft brush is recommended.
Q: Are baby teeth really important to my child’s oral health?
A: Primary, or “baby” teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, but they also aid in maintaining arch space and forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to erupt.
Q: At what age should I bring my child for their first dental hygiene visit?
A: Dr. Plumlee likes to introduce a child to the dental office at around the age of three for a basic exam. This way, the child will get to know Dr. Plumlee and the staff and future dental appointments will be great experiences.
